Leah had some very special visitors today so there are more pics coming later, but here are pics from the past few days!

045
“Gran, what did you just do to my hair??? OMG, now you’re taking a picture?”

055 058
“Oh come on. You can’t be serious about these socks.”

076
Does it get any sweeter than this?

083
Oh. Maybe it does.

020
Aunti Staci, did we do it right? I threw in duck-lips and everything!

021
Um, hey, Leah? We’re taking a selfie here! Yawn on your own time!

026
“Mommy, let me just tell you…”

Always her favorite spot.

Be careful what you joke about…

Sorry for the delay! LeahBug has been a little bit fussy the past couple of days as it is time for her four-month vaccines. We had them spread out over a few days so as not to slam her little body with so much in one huge shot, but that didn’t stop her from spiking a little fever yesterday. It was only 99.5 degrees, but I could tell she was working up a fever even when her temp was reading at 98.3 and then 98.7. Isn’t that weird? I was saying all afternoon that she felt warmer than usual. Maybe she takes after her mama and runs a low body temperature. She was fine today though, fever-wise, though she slept through most of the day. She did cough out her tube 3 different times and also yanked it off once, tape and all. Baby: 4. Repogle: 0.

In the afternoon. Leah woke up to visit with her Mama’s bestie, Auntie Z, while Mama played outside with Z’s baby RyRy. The plan had been for Gran to watch RyRy while Z visited with Leah and me, but I got a phone call this morning from the ER downstairs informing me that Ms. Gran had fallen and potentially broken her wrist. Oh no! As it turns out, yes, Gran has an impacted fracture in her wrist. They had to put her arm in some sort of torture device to straighten it out for splinting. Owwwwww.

There is a really long hallway on the way upstairs to PICU, and I always joke that I really want to roller-skate down that hallway. Many folks respond that they would probably break a bone if they tried, and I point out that if you have to fall, what better place than a hospital hallway where you’re already 50 feet from the emergency room? But dear Gran, I didn’t ask for a volunteer demonstration!! We are very glad it was just the wrist and not something bigger and more serious, but it still completely sucks and we hope it heals quickly and that they don’t need to operate. Feel better soon!!!

Auntie Z holds BabyBug for the first time!

And Apes

In case you’re still wondering about weight, Leah is 9 lbs and just over 4 oz. They have returned to weighing her every day (up from every week), probably because we stopped fortifying her milk.

This afternoon Grandpa Bill and Grandma Barbie came to visit. They started joke-squabbling over who got to hold her first, and I jumped in and said, “Okay guys – Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock.”  Good times. In the end I made them pick a number between 1 and 100, because I couldn’t remember the order of operations for the other one. For the record, the number was 77. Grandma Barbie won with her guess of 66. Grandpa Bill’s guess was 12. I know you wanted to know.

BabyBug had a long road to SleepyTown tonight. We replaced her repogle, changed about 10 diapers (not sure that’s an exaggeration – the kid is on Lasix so she pees SO MUCH), cleaned out some cloggy tubes, sang, danced, nommed on tiny toes, snuggled, bounced, vibrated, rocked… she finally seemed ready for some real sleep after the midnight feed, so I picked her up and bounced and rocked her to sleep with a medley of songs including, “Somewhere That’s Green” and “Don’t Feed the Plants” from Little Shop of Horrors, “It’s a Small World,” “Tum Balalaika” (in Yiddish), and “This is Very Good,” a Jewish camp song alternatively known as “When God Made the World.” Those of you in the know about our history with Jewish summer camp may appreciate that when I got to the line, “AND APES,” her sleepy little face broke out into a big grin. That’s my girl!

In other news, tonight our child will likely dream about an apocalyptic battle between apes and giant man-eating flytraps that takes place somewhere in suburbia.

The prettiest little Mickey you ever did see.

Photoblast! (You’re welcome, Cynthia!)

Not too much to update, so I’ll mostly throw pictures at you. We had Gran stay with Leah on Friday so we could take a much-needed Mama Day, including a trip to the beach for our own little Tashlich, a Jewish custom performed during the High Holy Days. I can’t wait until we can bring Leah to see the ocean! She will be a great sand-castle architect. I just know it.

I spent Friday night and most of Saturday at Yom Kippur services, so I’ve been missing my BabyBug like crazy this weekend, even though I spent hours and hours with her after services yesterday. I’m running a BabyBug deficit. Need to balance that out with my sleep deficit. Today was better, though.

Like I said, there are not really any new updates for BabyBug. She’s growing, and her g-tube site is starting to look better. The tube is still clogging plenty, and she is still hacking up spitballs almost every day. Lately she has taken to coughing during her meals. It’s the oddest thing. We think perhaps she is salivating more from smelling the milk… but I’m also wondering if it’s possible that she’s experiencing reflux and some sort of muscle reflex is being triggered to make her cough or gag even though there is no connection between her stomach and her esophagus that would allow her to spit up.

In Mama news… I have my surgery a week from tomorrow. Keeping fingers crossed that it helps.

010
Quite possibly the cutest SleepyBug yet.

This is what happens when our nurse puts a towel over our hair so we don’t get cold while we’re getting dressed. Hehe.
111
I had to tear myself away from this face yesterday morning to go to Yom Kippur services. With all of my health issues I’ve been ordered by my doc not to fast completely, but I managed to get through the holiday on one bottle of Ensure. But hey – I’ve had days where I consumed less (if you deduct calories up’n’out from calories in…) :-/

114
Mandy sent this photo to me while I was away. She made this dress!

A short update from my phone

It was a silver nitrate kind of day. Fine for the first half and screamy for the second half. BabyBug had to have Tylenol to help with the pain, which seemed to get worse after a couple of hours. But once the Tylenol kicked in she actually smiled a couple of times while I was holding her. Little twitchy smiles. In the transition from screaming to calm she had been practicing her teenager faces – one eyebrow raised, scowl, pout, eye roll. Her tube also clogged multiple times today and they did deep suctioning in her nose and mouth twice (where they stick a catheter down and suction out what’s accumulated there). Bunch of spit balls too.

Now the little Bug is in her crib, WIDE awake and talking / snorting to herself. Every once in a while I hear a little “aye” coming from her direction. That’s her favorite syllable. “Aye.” Perhaps she is working up to “oy vey.”

Photoblast and a date for LeahBug’s surgery

So Leah managed to break both of our hearts this week, in her own tiny and endearing way. The other day, Mandy was cradling Leah in her arms and she started trying to nurse, making little smacking noises and nibbling on Mandy’s shirt. It was simultaneously the sweetest and saddest thing she’s done. Then yesterday morning, the surgical residents came in to put the silver nitrate on the granulation tissue forming around Leah’s Mini button. I went to stand by her, and she opened her eyes and smiled up at me a couple of times in that twitchy way that she smiles. She was so sweet and snuggly and it was so sad because I knew in a few seconds she would be screaming. I got up to stand with her this morning as well, when they drew blood. This poor kid is going to start thinking every time she sees me standing at her bed something horrible is going to happen!

BabyBug had lots of visitors this weekend. Thursday morning I went to Rosh Hashanah services, and in the afternoon, cousin Natalie brought cousin Jenna for a visit. Friday, Leah got to meet her Great-Uncle Ricky and Great-Auntie Heather for the very first time! We had a fabulous visit! Saturday, Gran and Uncle Bryan both came to visit, and Uncle Bryan took us all out for lunch. Thanks, Uncle Bryan! On Sunday, Great-Uncle Ricky and Great-Auntie Heather came back for another visit along with Grandpa Bill (Leah must have been so confused – Grandpa Bill and Great-Uncle Ricky look so much alike they could be twins!). A little bit later in the morning, cousin Zachary and Aunti Staci came to visit, and we had a cousin party. Good times.

Today, LeahBug started off her day with labs (she starts off every week with a case of the Mondays!). Another week, another blood draw! Later in the morning, Mama went home for a bit, but first she ran amok in Babies R Us with Leah’s Gran (WAIT until you see the dress Gran got for her!!). Later in the afternoon, Uncle Ralph took me back to the hospital and stayed to visit for a bit before skipping off to the Dodgers came with Grandpa Bill. We also had a nice visit from one of my old classmates from law school.

I probably should have led with this, but we have a surgery date for Leah: November 1. They were going to schedule it on October 31 (I guess they really meant END of October!) but the doctor will be away that day. I guess this means Leah will be conscious for her first Halloween after all. 🙂 But she definitely won’t be home by Thanksgiving!!! That would have made a really nice Chanukah present.

Okay, in all fairness, those previous two pictures were meant to be a parody of this photo of me holding Zach, with several adults hovering over me. Not gonna lie though – Mama had her hand on Leah’s head through like, the whole first half of the Zach+Leah snugglage.

It’s probably not a great idea to have this many cousins together at any given time. Horrible puns ensue.

First accidental milestone

BabyBug did something pretty freakin’ cool tonight.

We asked earlier today if we might be able to take Leah outside for a couple of minutes just so she could experience fresh air and sunshine. The docs said no. We did get her nurses to agree to let us bring her to the pull-out couch a few feet from the crib so we could give her real tummy-time and give her some new surroundings for a little while. Mandy sat next to Leah on the pullout bed and put her on her tummy. Leah struggled for a minute and then pushed herself up – and then rolled over. Now, to be fair, Mandy was sitting on the bed so there was a slight incline in the direction that Leah rolled. But she pulled herself up onto her arms and she tipped herself over. That’s gotta be some sort of cool milestone, right? First accidental milestone? We tried to get her to do it again on video, but she had worn herself out and spent most of the remainder of her tummy time trying to eat the sheet we had laid out under her.

Now for a random musing: It’s funny how nurses sometimes try to rationalize a situation without fully assessing it – kind of like the other day when they assumed BabyBug’s horrible raspy breaths were actually the sounds of the suction tube sucking when in fact they suggested the opposite. Tonight I let the night nurse know that Leah’s suction pump was vacillating between off and barely-on-but-not-really (it’s on low intermittent but this was pretty ridiculously low). She said it was supposed to be like that because it was on low intermittent suction, and headed back out. I watched the meter for a minute to see if it would change, and then went out and got her again and said I thought maybe someone had turned it down because the meter was not really moving and neither were the secretions in the tube (it’s happened a few times that a nurse would put it on continuous suction to flush the tube and then forget to switch it back to intermittent, so someone turning it down was certainly a possibility). She looked and repeated that it was supposed to be like that. I said no, usually the meter is a lot higher. She said she didn’t want to put it any higher because it would suction too much. I said it wasn’t moving at all.

Then she looked more closely and saw that the tube wasn’t plugged into the pump.

As soon as she plugged it in, the meter shot back up to where it was supposed to be.

Do I feel a little foolish for not noticing that myself? Sure. But it’s not a connection that I typically deal with since it’s on the other end of a tube that is 4-6 feet long (I guesstimate). And in any event, is it my job to make sure the medical equipment is installed correctly? No. But it’s my job to speak up when something feels wrong. Thankfully this nurse did follow through when I continued to push the issue, instead of letting her ego get the better of her. I can just imagine how things might have gone with Mr. Mean Man. But I still think it’s interesting/odd/funny how the instinct seems to be to assume things are as they should be.

More photos than you can handle

Whew – it’s been a few days since I gave you a good update! These past few days have been largely uneventful in terms of major issues. Let’s keep it that way! Leah has had a lot of visitors “this September” (also known as the past three days). Last week she had special visits from her Grandpa Bill, her Aunti Staci and friend Kimmy, and her Gran. On Sunday, she had a visit from her friend Sharon from Mandy’s choir. Later in the day, cousins Kim and Jenna came over (after going on a wild goose chase for cornstarch for us – thank you!!!!!), and Jenna held a baby for the first time ever! Jenna even got to help give Leah a bath, comb her hair, and pick out an outfit. I’m sure Leah and Jenna will still be hearing about the visit years from now.

Yesterday, SweetBug’s alter-ego emerged after an extended absence – you can call her Ms. CrankyPants. I really can’t blame her, though. At 6AM the mean vampire nurses came in to steal her blood. (Okay, they really were not mean at all, but if you were 4 months old I’m sure you would think the same of anybody who came at you with a needle and a bunch of vials. Or maybe you still feel that way.). A little later in the morning, the surgical residents came to put silver nitrate on the new granulation tissue around the Mini button. Then, the occupational therapist came in to make Leah WORK! She had to hold her head up, grip stuff, pretend to stand up, move her neck from side to side, watch stuff with her eyes… it was exhausting. You don’t even know. So by the time our friends Marie and Donald came to meet Leah, she was suuuuuper cranky. We had all these awesome intentions of putting the kid in her hand-crocheted Minnie Mouse outfit (courtesy of another of Mandy’s choir friends), but she was not having it. Alas.

Later in the day, Grandpa Bill and Grandma Barbie came for a nice visit. Grandma and Grandpa snuggled with BabyBug while the Mamarazzi hovered and took video and pictures and Grandma Barbie tried to swat her away. It didn’t work. You can’t stop the Mamarazzi! Muahahahahaha!

It wasn’t until after my parents left that we were finally able to get the little diva into her Minnie outfit. At that point it was a matter of principle. Plus we wanted pictures. 🙂 We took pity on Leah and changed her outfit once we were done with our little photoshoot. She went from Minnie Mouse to Lady BabyBug – complete with antennae-bearing hat. We took the ladybug hat off after the second round of pictures, ’cause we’re nice like that. Baby finally knocked out in the early evening. This morning my friend and old law school classmate Beth came to visit, and pretty soon we are going to have a Very Special Visit from cousins Beth and Brian and Erin, who we haven’t seen in weeeeeeeks ’cause they were out of town. Leah misses them so, and is especially excited to see Cousin Erin and find out if she met Minnie Mouse on the Disney cruise.

The Big Deal of this week will be the meeting we have with the surgeons on Friday to discuss next steps for Leah. If you were wondering why we needed cornstarch: the doctors are having the nurses treat the Mini button site with 1:1 portions of Nystatin powder and cornstarch to keep it clean and dry, and Leah is still on oral antibiotics. They are applying silver nitrate about every other day or so. I worry about how Leah will do with major surgery when she has responded so poorly to the g-tube insertions, but I guess that’s part of why they want her to get bigger before doing a repair.

And now, you shall have pictures.

Baby and her impeccable timing

We spent most of the day at Mandy’s brother’s house for our nephew’s 10th birthday. BabyBug slept most of the morning, and was sound asleep when we got back. This does not bode well for our sleep this evening. We both almost fell asleep at 9PM – I am wishing we had taken the nap then! The Tiny Diva is wide awake.

Delinquent BlogMama

Sorry for the delay in updating. I’ve now received multiple emails and texts asking where the update is, and my mother-in-law and brother-in-law are ganging up on me in person to demand a new post. Uncle Ralph says lack of sleep is not an excuse. Hehehe. 🙂

Not too much going on here. BabyBug is behaving herself, the nurses are behaving themselves… Really though, they have all been awesome. It was just the one who was Mean Mean Mean. Thanks for all your supportive comments and solidarity! The outcome of that whole mess is that they put an order into the system to ensure that her tube is flushed and checked at intervals, so at minimum we know that’s happening. I think the story even got to the PICU doctor, because he made a comment about maybe moving her to Peds later on when she is more stable, and I said she needs constant attention to her suction tube (they have more patients per nurse in Peds) and he said, “I heard.” I guess word gets around when a parent throws a fit. :-/

Mommy Mandy is back to work now and her first week went well. She misses BabyBug during the day but is glad to be back. Mama Lisa is doing okay – started some new meds and they have provided a tiny bit of relief, but not enough. I have a surgery scheduled at the end of September and am hoping that will restore some normalcy to my otherwise thoroughly upside-down days. I do miss good food. Or like… solid food in general.

FYI: Leah is starting to make tiny vocal sounds. Her favorite “word” right now is a sweet little “Aye.” Hopefully we will catch it on video and share.
